Do you know any precautions for using soft waveguides?

Soft waveguide is an indispensable connector for microwave equipment, generally in the shape of a diamond. It is a transmission line that serves as a buffer between microwave equipment and feeders. The inner wall of a soft waveguide has a corrugated structure, which has good flexibility and can withstand complex bending, stretching, and compression. Therefore, it is widely used for connecting microwave equipment and feeders. If the requirements for the indicators are not high, domestically produced ones are generally used. The main indicators of soft waveguide include transmission frequency, reception frequency, standing wave ratio, and return loss. Let's take a look at the things to pay attention to during use.

(1) When meeting the electrical performance requirements, it is advisable to choose a soft waveguide with a larger cross-sectional size.

If there are four soft waveguides with the same length (110mm) but different cross-sectional dimensions, and the flanges at both ends of the waveguide are constrained, the stress analysis results of the soft waveguide under the same random vibration excitation show that under the same load, the stress of the soft waveguide with a relatively larger cross-sectional size is smaller. Therefore, on the basis of meeting electrical performance, it is advisable to choose a soft waveguide with a larger cross-sectional size as much as possible.

(2) When installing the soft waveguide, try to align the normal direction of the wide surface of the soft waveguide with the direction where the maximum displacement difference exists as much as possible.

According to the performance parameters of soft waveguide products, the allowable bending radius for the wide and narrow surfaces of soft waveguides is different. The allowable bending radius for the wide surface is smaller than that for the narrow surface, which means that under the same curvature, the prestress is smaller when bending the wide surface.

(3) Try to keep the area where the soft waveguide is connected to the flange as straight as possible.

Avoid significant bending of the soft waveguide at the connection position with the flange during assembly. Due to the fixed bending radius allowed by soft waveguides, the larger the curvature (i.e., the smaller the bending radius), the greater the stress on the waveguide. Reducing the local bending curvature can reduce the prestress generated during the assembly of soft waveguides.

(4) Choose a suitable length of soft waveguide.

An excessively long soft waveguide can result in a larger suspended mass in the waveguide. During vibration, the soft waveguide is affected by the suspended mass in its middle, causing an increase in suspended mass and root stress; But if the soft waveguide is too short, it means that the part of the soft waveguide used to adapt to deformation is relatively short, which can easily cause excessive local curvature at the connection position between the soft waveguide and the flange, resulting in a large pre stress at the root of the soft waveguide connection, and even fracture when stimulated.

The above are the precautions for using soft waveguides. When selecting and installing waveguides, be sure to clearly record the model and specifications in advance, keep them vertical, and prevent bending and damage. (Shilian Electronic Pin Female Pin Female Connector)
